Coptic Hymnology I will focus on moderate to advanced Coptic hymns in the ordinary or annual season of the Coptic liturgical calendar. More specifically, these hymns will be from the Divine Liturgy, including Matins, the Offertory, and the Liturgy of the Word. The hymns will include Tengosht (long), Sotis, Al el Korban, Agios (long), Shere ne Maria (long), Nisavev Teero, Hiten (long; Coptic and English), and Rejoice, O Mary (English). Each week a new hymn is taught through video files and custom hand-written musical ornaments. Each lesson includes spiritual, theological, and practical commentary on each given hymn. The student is then expected to learn, record, and upload that hymn for grading. Additionally, each week, students are required to offer an online post reflecting on the hymn, its meaning, and its spirituality, bearing in mind its placement within the broader framework of the given liturgical service.
