As the Church spread in the land of immigration, the rank of the full Deacon (Diakon) came back to the light. Its revival was mainly for helping in Liturgical services, followed by other extended services in the Church such as serving new immigrants. For this reason the course is designed to pave the way for ordained Deacons to learn from the history of this rank and to reflect on its current needs, applying it with wisdom to the needs of the Church community of believers and the surrounding communities. The course serves as a backbone for how service should be in light of 2000 years of experience in the Coptic Orthodox Church.

This course (BIBL 604) analyzes Egyptian history and culture, utilizing archaeological, textual, and iconographic sources. Biblical narratives that are set in Egypt, or where Israelite history intersects with Egypt, will be examined, with special emphasis on the Hebrew sojourn and Exodus.
